Dit laatste wordt zelf gesynthetiseerd door een reactie tussen stikstof (N2) en waterstof (H2). Deze twee reacties vinden plaats bij hoge druk. Na synthese heeft ureum in zuivere vorm de vorm van een vaste stof, d.w.z. korrels, en is het reukloos en kleurloos.
